Derby Hats

The horses were beautiful, yes, they were, but my favorite part of the Kentucky Derby is the hats. I’m a hat girl (I use the term ‘girl’ loosely) from day one. Raised in a Baptist church where every woman wore a hat, I don’t remember ever not having at least a few.

When I was a child, one of the most exciting things about Easter was the new spring hat. It was always white straw with a rolled brim and a pastel ribbon, and maybe a small silk flower, Oh, yes, and the black elastic that went under the chin to keep it on. It was often accompanied by a little straw, drawstring purse. Those went with shiny, Patent Leather shoes in either black or white, Mary Janes, with a strap to keep them on our feet, and white anklets trimmed with a lace ruffle. White gloves completed the look. The dress was secondary to the accessories. The boys got a new outfit, too. A suit and white shirt and a clip-on tie. No one cared what the boys wore.

That was sixty decades ago and that same style is still on the store shelves every April.

As to this year’s Derby, I noticed the many, many little hat-like things they call fascinators adorning the women–and Olympic skater Johnny Weir. Don’t get me wrong–I do love the little chapeaus, but if I ever attended the Derby–I would be wearing a HAT!! A big, cover your shoulders hat, with lots of flowers and maybe some sparkly net. A make everyone look at you hat, a Star Jones, Kendra Wilkinson kind of hat.

Then again, I still wear hats like that every Sunday, even if I am the only one in church with one.

Just for good measure, on weekdays, I wear a cowboy hat. I have over a dozen, some straw for summer, some felt for winter. There is also an assortment of knit hats. Oh, and I also have a group of sun hats, Scarlett O’Hara type hats, straw, with ribbons. One of the best Christmas presents I ever got was a bundle of big hat boxes like they give you in stores when you buy a big hat.

Like I said, I’m a hat girl, and, yes, I use the word ‘girl’ loosely.
