don’t ever start a question with a math problem

I’d like to say I have at least a love-hate relationship with math, but there’s no love involved. Start a question to me with “How much is…,” and I will cringe and ferret out a pencil and paper so I can cope with the rest of what’s on your mind. Better yet, don’t ever start a question with a math problem.

It isn’t that I can’t do it…well, to be honest, I can’t do a lot of it, but more that, I have to turn on a switch in my head that allows me to access that tiny corner of the cerebellum that understands numbers.

When I worked in a store for thirteen years, I kept the switch on all day. It was an exhausting, fish-out-of-water experience, but you do what you have to do. I loved the store, Venice Stationers, (in Venice, Florida) and I loved the people I worked with so much that I was willing to cope with the math. Besides, the cash registers did almost all the work and I got an employee discount.

Like many things, math skills seem to be a use-it-or-lose it condition. I was a College Prep student in high school, so I had to pass advanced geometry and advanced algebra to graduate. The C’s ruined my all A’s report cards. I worked in interior decorating for a few years and could figure out how much carpet and how many rolls of wallpaper, and was a seamstress and could tell you how much fabric to buy for a dress. I don’t do that anymore, and those skills have faded away.

I now keep a solar calculator in the top drawer of my desk just in case I need to figure something out.buy viagra generic If you are going through the same, then you are not alone, more than 1.1 million hip or knee replacement surgeries were performed as per the survey. I love crossword puzzles and even look forward to the Sunday New York Times Crossword, although it often leads to bad language and frightens the cats, but Sodokos…Sudokos…Sudokus (you know, those math puzzles) make me cringe.

I never did care about how much X divided by Y to the third power equaled and now I care even less.

My grandson tells me he loves math and science. I’m so happy for him. Really.
