ASSEMBLY REQUIRED

Back when I first moved into this house, I put up pretty shelves with fancy brackets for my shoes. Even though I installed them with molly anchors, over time, they began pulling loose. I decided to replace them with something that would stand on the floor. After some online searching, I found two cabinets from Home Depot that looked nice and wouldn’t cost a fortune. Of course, they had to be assembled, ergo the low price. Shipping was delayed, but I was in no hurry.

I also ordered a patio dining set (not Home Depot) that was $1,200 if I wanted it already assembled, or $659 if I could do it myself. Hah! I’m not likely going to pay someone $600 to do a job I know how to do. I always say, if you give me good directions, I can build the pyramids. I was younger when I first said that, but that’s another story.

The set arrived in only a few days, and I immediately unpacked the three HUGE boxes. I had the contents stacked up all over the living room. It consisted of 54 pieces of rattan rectangles of various sizes and over 100 pieces of bolts, etc. The directions were on ONE sheet of 8 x 10 paper with no print, only drawings that looked like they were done by a six-year-old with no printed instructions, only sketches of the finished furniture. The parts list had things like A-1 and B-2 on it, but the parts had no such corresponding labels. It was catch as catch can. It took me two whole days to get the job done, guessing what should be attached to which. I finally finished and now am pleased with not only the dining set, but with myself. I persevered. I saved $600.

Today, UPS notified me that my shoe cabinets are arriving tomorrow. I realized I needed to get the closet ready to receive them. First, take down the shelves I installed three years ago. The top ones were easy, but I had to lie down on the floor to get the last two. To lie down, I use my step-stool for support, and ease down in steps. Now, I’m down there, and need a different tool. Up … and back down … twice. I get the last shelf down and see that I have a bunch of molly anchors still stuck in the wall. I either have to pull them out or push them the rest of the way through. Once that is accomplished, I quit for the day, but my mind is still running around in my head.

I have to sand down the rough spots where I made holes in the wall, fill in the craters with caulk, sand down the caulk when it dries, re-texture the wall, and paint it. Then, I realize I have to make a permanent decision about the floor. I just had my bathroom retiled and stopped at the closet, where I have carpet. Am I going to put the new cabinets on the carpet, which I don’t like anyway, or am I going to take it up and install the tile, which is already here and sitting in the corner?

The steps to a finished floor involve, taking up the floor molding on that wall, and the carpet, and the tack strips, cleaning the cement floor, installing the tile, letting the adhesive dry, applying the grout, and mopping up… all this while my wardrobe has been taken out of the room and is lying on the bed, where the cats will make their nest on top of it. (sigh)

I decide I might as well go ahead and do it right, so I opt for the tile. I don’t have a tile saw, but know someone who does.

The shoe cabinets will be here this afternoon. I’ll let the boxes stand by the front door until the wall in the closet has been healed and the floor is done, then, I’ll be ready to open them and tackle the work. All I have to do is assemble … how many parts?

Meanwhile, I’ll pray for good directions.
