I was never one to have a gaggle of friends but always only two or three to whom I was close. Carol Summers Wheatley was one of those. We met in seventh grade, and she and Shelby Turnbull MacFarlane, the other leg of our triangle stood up with me at my wedding.
Later on, her older sister, Verleen Honeycutt, made the group a rectangle. My newest book, “The Lake” is based on one of our adventures.
Whn we moved to Florida, I found another friendship treasure in Sandy Novarro. Here in Nevada, I have Barbara Winters, Jeane Harvey. and MaryAnn Unger. As I said, I am comfortable with two or three by my side and have been blessed.
Even when our life paths separated us by a continent, Carole’s friendship never faltered. I was fortunate to be reunited with her and Verleen and Shelby for too brief a time two years ago. We lost Shelby a few months after that.
Carol went home yesterday, and even though I’m sure I’ll see her again, my heart aches for her absence.
