So Long, Santa

I love Christmas. If you wonder how much, I have five trees to put up. Two of them go on the front porch with my light-up doggie who closely resembles my real doggie. One tree is six feet tall and the other three feet. Since they’ll be out in the weather, the only décor they get is a star on top.

I have three in the house, a six-footer, a seven-footer, and another three-footer. They’re my “theme” trees.

The little one is my family tree, named that because it’s decorated with ornaments given to me over the years, many of them hand made. There’s a dozen my oldest sister-in-law gave me. She was a practical nurse who tended to private patients. She sat by their beds and made things to keep busy. She’s passed now, and over the years, they’re showing wear, but I treasure them all.

There’s one that has two cats in a basket, hand-painted and presented to me by a co-worker, Mary Ann.

One is a first-grade effort by one of my children, a turquoise ball trimmed with lace and sequins.

The tallest tree, I call my “Bird Tree.” It’s trimmed with an assortment of bird ornaments I’ve collected over the years.

The last tree is the “Leftover” tree. It gets whatever was still in the boxes.

I also have a collection of angel statues, some of those gifts. I have a lot of bookshelves in the house, and the angels are lined up according to height.

I’m at the age when my energy level only lasts a few hours at a time. I work a while, nap a while. It took me the better part of three days, starting the day after Thanksgiving, to get it all on display.

After a horrible year, thanks to Covid, this was a wonderful Christmas. I spent the whole day with my daughter. I cooked a turkey and all the turkey stuff, and we watched movies, napped, and ate. Lovely.

Christmas is long over now, and it’s time to store it away for another year.

I didn’t make a New Year’s resolution, I never do, but if I had, it would be to stow away the décor in an orderly manner. So far, I’m doing just that. As I take it down, it’s sorted, boxed, and arranged neatly in a garage cabinet.

I’m taking my time. I might not finish until Valentine’s Day, so there’s no need to be slipshod.

I still have two trees to go, but it might be another week before I finish. So what? I’m enjoying it.

A late Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all of you.
