AUTUMN

Finally!!! It’s Autumn. Now, Spring (notice that I’m capitalizing those two seasons) is my favorite season. I’m a rose lover and in the Spring, the Vegas area roses go berserk and bloom with dozens and dozens for two months. Then . . . it’s summer. It gets h-o-o-o-t! Temperatures will be over 100’ every day for about three months. We Southern Nevadans endure, but the blossoms don’t. Even with watering every day, the blossoms disappear and the leaves shrivel up.

I wear a broad-brimmed hat every time I leave the house. Sandals are practically required, and my feet don’t see a pair of socks for months. Like most Nevadans, I walk around constantly sipping from bottles of water because a person can go from normal to dehydrated in minutes. Forget sleeves! I wear tank tops right out in public, and I don’t care how bad my upper arms look.

Then, it’s Autumn. I can wear long sleeves again and even the many, many jackets I own (I don’t know why I have so many—I just love jackets) will get a chance to get out of the house. I can leave the windows open and fill the house with fresh air. It’s a miracle . . . no air conditioner required. I can sleep through the night without the AC waking me up every twenty minutes. I can leave my car parked in the sun for more than a little while and not have it turn into an oven.

The blooms aren’t as abundant as they were last Spring, but wonderful still. The purple sages are big balls of little lavender flowers. The oleanders are covered in blossoms. Beautiful!

The only drawback to this time of year is that in a few days, we have to change the clocks. I wish they’d stop doing this Daylight Savings Time thing. Spring forward, Fall back. The worst is the clock in my car. I don’t know anyone who thinks it’s is a good idea.

I’m retired. I go to bed when I want, and get up when I want, so I’m not sure why it bothers me. Part of it is the actual act of changing the ten clocks inside the house. I like clocks, and they need to be adjusted anyway. None of them have the same time at the moment. Maybe I resent the time change because if I wake up at four in the morning and can’t go back to sleep, I can get up and think of it as the beginnings of a new day. If the same thing happens to me after the change and it’s three o’clock, I feel like I’m up in the middle of the night.

At any rate, it’s Glorious Autumn. The roses are happy, the trees are changing to a beautiful assortment of colors, and the temperature is average—a time of year devoutly to be wished.
