Time to Make a Change

The original intent of the handshake was to let the other person see that you were not carrying a weapon. This worked only as long as your opponent was right-handed.

Times have changed, and with the proliferation of the Coronavirus and other infectious illnesses, I think it’s time we ended the handshake. The Asian custom of a slight bow to greet someone is highly preferable. Doctors are on television urging us to wash our hands, front and back, often, with soap, for twenty seconds.

I happen to share some other people’s distaste of being touched by strangers. I’ll hug and kiss my family and close friends, but I never did like shaking hands. The other thing is, when a stranger offers his hand, I always wonder where that thing has been. Have they touched every stair railing they came to? Have they pushed a grocery cart without wiping the handle? Did they shake hands with a hundred other strangers? If they had to sneeze, did they block it with their hand?

I firmly believe meeting someone is a time for the polite, germ-free bow. I don’t want to insult anyone, so if my Asian acknowledgement of a hello takes you the wrong way, you might want to ask yourself where my hand might have been.
